It was late October when I found these two families of Trumpeter Swans paddling the backwaters of the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge in central Minnesota. Trumpeter Swans came very close to extinction from early Europeans hunting them for their meat, skins, and feathers in the 17 and 1800s. They were completely gone from Minnesota by the 1800s, and by the 1930s, only 69 remained, living in the remote Red Rocks Lakes area of SW Montana. Thankfully, due to the Endangered Species Act and the Minnesota DNR, Trumpeter Swans are once again part of the beauty of my home state of Minnesota. There are now estimated to be over 63,000 Trumpeter Swans in North America.
